How To Use Equalization In Audacity
Audio engineers use equalization as a means to reduce or increase specific frequencies of a particular sound in order to build to it, or make it sit clearer in a mix. These frequencies are often split into three or five bands; lows, mids and highs, or bass, mid-range and treble.
- In Audacity, which is a free open source audio recording and editing application, you can use their “equalization” effects tool. Most times you can significantly remove or completely eliminate the unwanted sound by reducing the frequency range where you hear the metallic sound. Typically you hear metallic, tinny sounds in the range of 7 kilohertz to 9 kilohertz.
- Equalization is a way of manipulating sounds by Frequency. It allows you to increase the volume of some frequencies and reduce others. This is a more advanced form of the EQ and Tone controls on many audio systems.
- The distortion effect was first created by guitar players overdriving their amps so that the waveform would become clipped. A similar effect can be done in a free and open-source program called Audacity.
- EQ (equalization) is probably the most important effect at your disposal as an audio engineer. EQ, compression, and reverb make up the basic effects of virtually any modern mix. Of the three, EQ is probably the most misunderstood and most misused. This tutorial will help you understand how to use EQ effectively, and apply it to virtually any situation.
